Second five-star review from Brighton

“….They might have won the Best Comedy Award at this very same festival last year but The Penny Dreadfuls aren’t resting on their laurels. Their new show ‘The Never Man’ is a ‘comic thriller’ that falls somewhere between ‘The Island Of Doctor Moreau’ and ‘Willie Wonka’s Chocolate Factory‘. It’s wonderfully crafted and replete with charmingly executed characters, and the troupe’s collective talent as narrators and performers seems to grow with every sketch as they successfully translate their Victorian humour of past shows to a post-modern setting for the first time….”

More reviews from the Brighton shows

May 6, 2009

Very complimentary review from The Argus (unfortunately unstarred, so we’ll assume like, at least 17). And more factual inaccuracies regarding Humphrey’s height, this time only 6ft. Hum. Poor guesswork, Nione Meakin, but very appreciative of the review:

“An imaginative adventure that recalls Scooby Doo, Indiana Jones, James Bond and Monty Python but never stoops to anything as ordinary as parody”

First review for The Never Man

May 6, 2009

Oooof. We kick off with a five-star review for our show in progress of The Never Man down in lovely Brighton. This is both wonderful and rather terrifying. Anything less would now be a crushing disappointment.

A show in the rough preparing for its Edinburgh premiere has no right to be this entertaining. This award-winning sketch group moved into the single linear story format last year successfully, and this year have stepped into the 21st century after previously being known for their Victorian settings. Favourite old themes are there, like global conspiracies, physical comedy and a plethora of characters to be played by the three performers, most notable of these being the comedic 8 3/4 year-old boy Paul as played by 6′ 6″ Humphrey Ker. The boys are on terrific form, delivering an excellent show and promise of fantastic heights at Edinburgh.

(Trivia fans: Humphrey actually stands at 6’7″ but he was only playing a small boy and that’s how good an actor he is)
